The Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior will not be able to play in the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Argentina due to a left thigh injury, confirmed by the national team officials after he had to leave the field during the game against Colombia. The 23-year-old, known for his performance at Real Madrid, “underwent imaging exams that confirmed an injury to his posterior left thigh muscle,” as per the statement released by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) on Friday. It was stated that Vinicius, an important part of Brazil’s attacking squad, has been ruled out of the match against arch-rivals and 2022 World Cup champions Argentina in Rio de Janeiro.

Vinicius had expressed concerns earlier about his chances of being fit for the Argentina game.

“Based on what the doctors have told me, it will be a bit difficult,” he said after Brazil’s 2-1 loss in Barranquilla on Thursday.

Vinicius had to exit the pitch during the World Cup qualifier against Colombia in the 27th minute, with his team leading 1-0.

“I think it’s the same injury as before. I felt a pain at the back of my thigh,” he said.

The Brazilian star had previously missed a month of action after sustaining an injury to his right thigh in a league match for Real Madrid towards the end of August.

He was absent from Brazil’s first two South American qualifying matches against Bolivia and Peru in September.

Brazil is set to face Argentina, who currently lead the qualification standings, on Tuesday at Rio’s Maracana Stadium.

The home team, positioned fifth, will also be without goalkeeper Ederson, defender Danilo, midfielder and captain Casemiro, and star forward Neymar, all due to injuries.
