India has voted in favor of a United Nations resolution criticizing Israeli settlements in Palestine. The resolution was passed, with seven countries including the United States and Canada opposing it, and eighteen countries abstaining from the vote.
This decision comes after India abstained from a previous vote on a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in casualties and displacement in the region.
India’s decision to abstain from the earlier vote was influenced by its concern for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and its stance against terrorism. The government’s position on the issue was reiterated through its explanation of the vote.
India has consistently supported a negotiated Two-State solution for the Israel-Palestine conflict and has emphasized the need for a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine living peacefully alongside Israel.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterized the Hamas strike as a “terrorist” action in response to the October 7 attacks, demonstrating India’s unequivocal support for Tel Aviv. However, the government’s statements on the crisis have indicated a more balanced approach as the human cost of the conflict continues to rise.
