Telangana’s highest-ranking police officer has been suspended for visiting Telangana Congress chief Revanth Reddy during the counting of votes for the assembly polls, as per sources in the election commission. Anjani Kumar, the Director General of Police in Telangana, along with two other senior police officials, has been asked to explain the alleged violation of the model code of conduct.
Anjani Kumar and the other police officials visited Mr. Reddy’s residence in Hyderabad earlier today. Photos of the top cop presenting a bouquet to the Congress chief have circulated widely on social media.
The decision of the DGP to meet one of the candidates was seen as a clear indication of malicious intention to seek favor, as per sources.
The Congress achieved a comprehensive victory, preventing the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) from securing a third consecutive term.
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi, now renamed Bharat Rashtra Samithi, led the statehood movement of Telangana and had enjoyed consistent support for a decade since the state was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.
The Congress, buoyed by its significant win in Karnataka, is leading in 64 of the 119 seats, surpassing the majority mark. BRS is ahead in 40 seats.
In the three other states where results were declared today – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh – the BJP emerged victorious.
