India has launched ‘Operation Indravati’ to evacuate its nationals from Haiti to the Dominican Republic, Exterior Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in a submit on social media platform X.

Taking to his official X deal with, Mr Jaishankar posted, “12 Indians evacuated in the present day. Absolutely dedicated to the safety and well-being of our nationals overseas.”

“Thank the Authorities of the Dominican Republic for his or her help,” he added.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Exterior Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, in a weekly press briefing on March 15, mentioned India was able to evacuate its residents from Haiti if want be.

“As , there’s a disaster in Haiti. And if required, we are going to evacuate. We’re able to evacuate. And if required, we are going to do this,” Jaiswal said.

Amid violence and looting within the impoverished Caribbean nation, a management room and an emergency helpline quantity had been opened to evacuate distressed Indian nationals from Haiti.

“We now have established a management room right here within the Ministry of Exterior Affairs. We now have emergency helpline numbers,” Mr Jaiswal added within the press briefing.

On issues over the security of Indian nationals in Haiti, Jaiswal mentioned the embassy in Santo Domingo within the Dominican Republic, which holds accreditation for Haiti, was monitoring the scenario.

“Our embassy in Santo Domingo is monitoring the scenario and the ministry is also totally monitoring the scenario,” Mr Jaiswal added on the presser.

Haiti has been below a state of emergency after some armed teams attacked the nation’s largest jail in Port-au-Prince earlier this month, killing and injuring police and jail workers and enabling some 3,500 inmates to flee, in response to CNN.

A frontrunner of one among these armed teams, Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Cherizier, took credit score for the jail break, saying it was a part of a plan to overthrow appearing Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s authorities.
